I think that in these days when a large percentage of our countries emergency response services are located in New Orleans that we all remain vigilant and observant about what is going on around us. And that we take up the charge to prepare ourselves to survive for at least the first 72 hours after a disaster.
Al-Qaida in Iraq declared war in Iraq this week which means that the troops we have there won't be coming home anytime soon - indeed it will delay the return of a good many troops that have been scheduled to come home over the next 3 months.
Plus Al-Qaida released a video last week stating that an attack on Los Angeles and Melbourne was imminent. I find this to be of great concern because it would be like Al-Qaida to attack when our response capability is highly taxed. What better way to do serious damage in our country?
I think it is important for citizens to call their local officials and voice your concern in this situation and ask that local and federal authorities raise the Security Advisory System Threat Risk to HIGH.
A New York City Event in any other American City while we are working on the Katrina Recovery will be even more devastating than a Terrorist attack by itself. They said that approximately nearly every major American City has sent approx 25 - 30% of its First Responders to the South for the Hurricane rescue and clean up.
Could we try to keep this thread focused on preparedness and not turn it into a political meta discussion. Thanks.

Re: Personal Perparedness Now
Sun, October 30, 2005 - 10:02 PMI have to agree, in the event of a disaster, wether it be natural or human induced, baring severe injury, the duty of preparedness and survival falls upon ones self or the head of a household. I recently read a small column on this very subject, the author had gone to the hardware and grocery stores and in about an hour and for less than $100 had gathered enough supplies to sustain himself for several days in the event of a disaster. This isn’t that hard and even small things can have a big impact when it is needed, something as simple as instead of throwing away the empty milk jugs you fill a few of them with water and store them in the back of the closet. Keep extra batteries and a flashlight in the kitchen drawer, blankets, a small camp style cook stove with fuel in the garage, extra non-perishable food items, all these things add up if you know where they are and how to use them. Most of us, myself included, always think it wont happen here, so we don’t really go out of our way to prepare and be accountable for ourselves farther away than our next meal or two. Im fortunate in the fact I am an avid backpacker so have all that gear here that I can rely on if need be, but be sure like everyone else, in the event of a disaster the first thing I will be looking for is no doubt the one thing I wont have. -

Thu, November 10, 2005 - 6:05 PMOne thing I could think of would be to network with organizations like Food Not Bombs, who know where a lot of otherwise wasted food is, so that in an emergency you know where to go for food, and you know people who'll help distribute that food to keep chaos somewhat lessened.
Also, portable water filters and detoxifying solutions are a must as, in a serious emergency, clean water may be limited.

Re: Personal Perparedness Now
Sun, November 27, 2005 - 10:19 AMEven if the government was not in the southern half of this country now, outside of one or two federal agencies, that will be on scene with in 24 hours. Most other agencies will not be on scene for 72hrs and even then, the rescuers who are dispatched to the scene are told to be self-suffivcient for at lest 72 hrs. -

okay. all this war and confusion about who owns what is the veil of illusion that is created from man's desire to avoid death. no matter how you try to run from it, that running always creates a conflict, or a crisis, or a situation that victimizes and terrorizes.
we are free right now. the government is not nearly as efficient or creative as the minds of all of us beautiful stars here on tribe.net talking about them. fact is...you guys are right. be prepared. for anything. for death. right now. there is no fear in preperation. all the people who need to do anything tend to be on the scene of a natural disaster when it happens. sometimes more and more of us are having to deal with it due to population density, among other things.
i carry a camel-bak with water and some basic food whenever i leave my house. i have most everything i would need to absolutely survive for 24 hours in that bag. more importantly...i live in a world of beautiful people who, if the world was falling around their heads this moments would deal with it perfectly. for some people that might mean dying...for some it might mean killing. but since i don't want to be in that crown...if you're looking for me when the sky is falling...i'll be chanting, and singing, and dancing.
the spiral is growing ever tighter.
